Liverpool: What Can They Achieve This Season?

All eras come to an end. The best you can hope for is that what comes after is anywhere near as good. When Jurgen Klopp announced that he would be leaving Liverpool after nine memorable years at the club, fans, pundits, and the club itself probably had doubts about what would come next.

It fell upon Arne Slot, the new Liverpool manager, to steer Liverpool into the future. Happily, his tenure has gotten off to a positive start, and it’s not ridiculous to think that Liverpool will end the season with a smile on their faces. Let’s take a look at what the club might achieve in this campaign.

Premier League: What’s Possible?

No one thought that Liverpool would challenge for the Premier League title in Slot’s first season. However, their fantastic start to the season, in which they won three games in a row, had fans reconsidering what the team might achieve this year. Liverpool currently have the third-best Unibet betting odds to end the season with the Premier League trophy, behind Arsenal and, of course, Manchester City. While it’s more likely that Liverpool will finish third, if they can build on the promising start they’ve made, then who knows what might happen?

Champions League: Liverpool’s Beloved Competition

Football match view from stands

After a year’s absence, Liverpool are back in the Champions League this season. However, while some clubs are simply happy to be in Europe’s premier competition, Liverpool will have higher ambitions. After all, they’ve got history with this competition. Having won the European Cup six times, they’re one of the most successful clubs on the continent, and won’t accept falling at the first hurdle.

Can they win the competition? Well, Manchester City and Real Madrid will surely have something to say about that. However, a journey into the deeper rounds is realistic – and if they can reach those stages, then who knows what might happen?

FA Cup: Anything’s Possible

Liverpool would be delighted to win the FA Cup. While it’s not the most prestigious trophy on offer this year, it still counts for a lot. The last time they won it, back in 2022, sparked wild celebrations across the city.

As with the Premier League, Liverpool are third favourites to win the FA Cup. Manchester City and Arsenal are bookmakers’ favourites to win the tournament. Still, there’s every chance that Manchester City have their eyes on other prizes, and it’s still not clear whether Arteta has the winning pedigree to win medals at the Emirates.

If Slot can bring the FA Cup to Liverpool, then it’ll be a successful first season.

League Cup: A Chance of Silverware

If Liverpool’s youngsters can show up like they did last year, in which they showed they were more than capable of doing a job for Liverpool, then the League Cup could be within reach. This is, of course, the least prestigious of all the trophies on offer, but anything to get the silverware tally up is welcome. Plus, Liverpool love this competition – they’ve won it a record ten times.

The Contract Situation

It’s not just on the trophy front that Liverpool can achieve things this year. The contract situations of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil Van Dijk, and Mohamed Salah remain open-ended. As it stands, they’ll be free to speak to non-English clubs from January, which means Liverpool could end up losing all three of the players for free. Of the three, it’s most important that the club tie down Alexander-Arnold, who is about to enter the best years of his career. If they can tie down all three, then the future of Liverpool will look bright; in fact, you’d argue that resolving the contract situations is even more important than winning the FA Cup.
